GPU size and case fit: length, width and slots

Learn how to check GPU length, width, slot thickness and cable clearance against a PC case before choosing a graphics card.

Direct answer

A GPU fits only when the exact retail board stays within the case limits in every direction and leaves room for its power cable, airflow and nearby components. Length alone is not enough. [1][2]

Check it in order

  1. 1Find the GPU clearance and expansion-slot allowance for the case's intended layout. [1][3]
  2. 2Check the remaining space after front fans, radiators, drive cages and other parts are fitted. [2][3]
  3. 3Check the exact card length, height or width and slot thickness from its manufacturer page. [1]
  4. 4Allow the cable bend and connector clearance required by the GPU and cable makers. [1][4]
  5. 5Confirm that the card will not block a required expansion slot or airflow path. [1]

Length is only one axis

A front radiator can reduce usable GPU length. Fractal's Define C example starts with a clearance that already includes front fans then subtracts radiator thickness. Check what your case's published limit includes before subtracting anything. [2]

A card can be short enough but still too tall for the side panel or too thick for the available expansion slots. Treat length, width and slot count as separate checks. [1]

Leave room for the power cable

NVIDIA asks for 36 mm of additional cable space for the RTX 4080 Founders Edition. That is a model-specific instruction rather than a universal bend allowance. Follow the instructions for your exact GPU and cable. [1]

CORSAIR's 12VHPWR instructions require correctly inserted and locked connectors without bending or force close to the plug. Do not force the side panel shut against a cable. [4]

Check installed components

Case layout and mounting hardware matter. Fractal's Meshify 2 FAQ describes storage-layout changes, drive-cage relocation and different clearance with vertical GPU risers. [3]

Check the installed space when possible. Use the case maker's GPU clearance for the final layout rather than the enclosure's outside dimensions. [2][3]

Use the exact retail model

A reference-card dimension cannot prove that a partner card using the same GPU will fit. Match the full retail model number to the board manufacturer's specifications before purchase. [1]

What the numbers cannot prove

  • Reference dimensions do not apply to every partner board. [1]
  • A listed slot count does not include all cable or airflow clearance. [1]
  • Installed radiators and mounting hardware can change usable clearance. [2][3]

Substantive claim review: . A successful link check alone does not change this date.

Reviewed card dimensions, case-layout restrictions and cable instructions. Kept model-specific examples scoped to the named products; this was not a physical fit test.
