Power planning
GPU power requirements: TGP, TBP, PSU and connectors
Understand GPU TGP, TBP, recommended PSU capacity and connector requirements before planning a graphics-card upgrade.
Sources and reviewCheck it in order
- 1Read the GPU's published TGP, TBP or board-power value without renaming the label. [1][2]
- 2Check the manufacturer's recommended power-supply capacity for the exact board. [1][2]
- 3Confirm the required connector type, connector count and cable guidance. [3]
- 4Account for the processor and other powered components in the computer. [2][4]
- 5Use only PSU cables and adapters approved for the exact hardware. Follow the installation instructions. [3][4]
Board power is not system power
NVIDIA's RTX 4080 page labels Total Graphics Power separately from Required System Power. AMD's RX 7900 XTX page similarly separates Typical Board Power from Minimum PSU Recommendation. Do not treat a board-level figure as a complete computer's power draw. [1][2]
SpecMatchup preserves the source label because differently named values are not guaranteed to represent identical lab methods. [6]
Recommended PSU is a separate requirement
The cited NVIDIA and AMD PSU recommendations name a Ryzen 9 5900X-based system and warn that requirements can vary with configuration. A PSU recommendation is not a measurement of GPU wattage or unused capacity. [1][2]
Check the whole system and the PSU's specified output rather than subtracting one headline number from another. AMD's recommendation also specifies a 12 V output requirement. [2][4]
Connector details matter
For its supplied RTX 4080 Founders Edition adapter, NVIDIA calls for at least three independent dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables. Its system specifications also allow a suitably rated PCIe Gen 5 cable. Do not apply that arrangement to every GPU. [3]
Follow the GPU and PSU manufacturers' cable guidance. CORSAIR's chart warns that some modular cable families are incompatible. Similar-looking plugs are not permission to mix cables. [4]
Seat and lock connectors as instructed. CORSAIR's 12VHPWR guidance also warns against force or bending near the connector and against bending the cable after it is plugged in. [5]
Partner cards can differ
NVIDIA identifies its specifications as Founders Edition or reference-design values and directs buyers to the add-in-card maker for shipping specifications. Verify the retail board's power and connector requirements before purchase. [1]

SpecMatchup editorial method
This guide is a synthesis of the cited manufacturer documentation and workload methodology, not firsthand hardware testing. SpecMatchup uses these sources to explain practical checks. Product-specific examples do not establish compatibility for every system.
Substantive claim review: . A successful link check alone does not change this date.
Reviewed vendor power labels, PSU assumptions and manufacturer cable instructions. Removed the native-cable-only implication because NVIDIA also specifies a supplied adapter option. No electrical testing was performed.
